Brigit, the new play by Tom Murphy, is to receive its world premiere in County Galway later this year, in a staging by Druid Theatre Company.

THE FIRST day of rehearsals in Galway kicked off on Monday morning at Druid Lane Theatre for the 11 cast members of Druid’s production of Big Maggie by John B Keane, directed by Garry Hynes.

The company started in Boston last February when five feet of snow prevented some of the audience from even reaching the theatre. Since then they’ve had temperatures soar to 45 degrees, clocked up 20,000 miles and next week they’re looking forward to returning home with Druid’s production of The Cripple of Inishmaan by Martin McDonagh.

A major new collaboration that will see NUI, Galway assist Druid’s next major production, and Druid develop workshops and seminars for the university, was launched this week.

Druid will stage Sean O’Casey’s The Silver Tassie in The Town Hall Theatre from August 21 to September 7 and Galway teenagers are being sought to take part.
